Biography

Automag is a power trio rock/Southern rock band from Johnston County, North Carolina. Formed in 1996, the band has methodically built an audience throughout the Tri-state area of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia by showcasing over 1000 performances in their 26 years as independent artists. The band has amassed a repertoire of 6 studio albums (Diamond Plate, Bulletproof, Hellbound, Backin'It Up, Deep In The Ditch, When The Moonshines) and 1 EP (Blue Chevelle) as well as a large list of covers/remakes from artists such as Skynyrd, Metallica, Hank Jr, AC/DC, Nugent, Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, Queen, Billy Squire, Jason Aldeen and many others. Automag's live show is a raucous affair headlined by an infectious Southern groove and Paul Quinn's devilishly good-humored trash talking. With every song ending in a band/crowd chorus of "AAAAAAAND DRNK!" a good time is all but guaranteed.

Reviews

Automag combines the heaviest of the sludge ridden 70's rock with more recent entries into the field like Monster Magnet and Clutch. This is a great album to just pump up to eleven and sit around with friends and sworn enemies while drinking someone else's booze. -” - Edge Magazine
For an indie release, the production quality on “Hellbound” is excellent. Check out “Dead Man Walking” and the decibels that will blow your eardrums out of whack. It’s pure energy rock that will pump you up for the next round. Some of the songs have the same guitar riffs which is noticeable and needs to be changed up a bit, but that did not deter me from enjoying “Hellbound.” “Hardcharger” sounds like METALLICA in the early days and I love the tune. I can’t wait to see what the future will hold as AUTOMAG matures. These guys are steering in the right direction and could make a major impact on the music scene. The guitar and vocals by Mighty Quinn are some of the strongest points and I see a bright future for AUTOMAG.” - Rocj Eyez

Tons of issues with pressing and distribution led to a four-year delay between Automag records, but you’d never know it. Quinn’s dixiefied Hetfield rhythm tone comes through loud and clear with nine new trailertrash anthems taking up right where “Hellbound” left off. True to form, following the example of the legends that spawned this music (Bon Scott, Lemmy, Dimebag), there isn’t going to be any wild deviations from one Automag record to the next. This is music for metal fans looking for power and consistency, and Quinn’s band comes through like faithful craftsmen. Lyrics are a shade lighter this time, the obsession with prison life and revenge is less prevalent, as Quinn explores similar topics like moonshine (“Johnson County’s Finest”), chasin’ women (“Rabbit Hole”) and just general badassery (“Bad Motherfucker”). There’s even a ballad (one of the most interesting tracks on the record), clean guitars gracefully straddling the line between Skynyrd and Metallica. I’ll always remain a fanboy of this band if only for lyrics like “I’m a redneck pornstar in the making.” Check out Automag's live Metallica medley on Youtube - its backwoods thrash-tastic.”
